Stanmore’s current station opened in December 1932, built by the Metropolitan Railway as a faster, more direct route into London than the existing Stanmore Village railway station a kilometre away, which required a change of train at Harrow & Wealdstone. The newer station won out, and the older village line closed in 1964. Like several stations on this side of London, Stanmore has changed operator without moving: Metropolitan line until 1939, Bakerloo line until 1979, and Jubilee line ever since, for which it remains the western terminus today. The surrounding area kept more of its semi-rural character than most of outer London, with Harrow Weald Common and the old village core sitting close to 20th-century suburban streets.
