Edgware takes its name from its position on Watling Street, the die-straight Roman road that survives today as the A5 Edgware Road, running for ten unbroken miles through this part of London. Its Underground station, designed by Stanley Heaps and opened in 1924 as the terminus of the Hampstead & Highgate line, was never meant to be the end of it — plans existed to push the line further out, in some proposals as far as Watford, before the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939 shelved the extension for good. Edgware has stayed the Northern line’s terminus ever since, with interwar suburban housing filling in around the station in the decades after it opened.
