Mill Hill is first recorded as “Myllehill” in 1547, named for a windmill on its ridge, and stayed hay-farming country supplying London’s horses well into the 19th century. Its most notable landmark is Mill Hill School, founded in 1807, where the lexicographer James Murray took up a teaching post in 1879 and began compiling what became the Oxford English Dictionary — he had a purpose-built scriptorium erected on the school grounds to hold the millions of paper slips the project generated. The area’s station, opened by the Midland Railway in 1868 and renamed Mill Hill Broadway in 1950, brought the suburban development that now surrounds the older ridge-top village and school buildings.
