Friern Barnet grew up as a suburb largely because of Colney Hatch, the Middlesex County Pauper Lunatic Asylum built here in 1851. It was the largest asylum in Europe when it opened — a single building with six miles of corridor and a nearly 1,900-foot frontage, designed to house 1,000 patients and soon extended to take 2,000 more. It later became Friern Hospital and finally closed in 1993; the huge building has since been converted into flats. The railway stations that reached Friern Barnet on the Great Northern and Metropolitan lines in the mid-19th century, arriving around the same time as the asylum, shaped the area’s Victorian terraced streets that still surround the old hospital grounds today.
