New Southgate is unusual even by London’s messy-boundary standards, spilling across three boroughs — a corner of Barnet, a corner of Enfield, where its electoral ward now sits, and on the loosest definitions a sliver of Haringey. The name itself is a rebrand: the area and its railway station were originally called Colney Hatch, after the hamlet next door, but that name became so tied to the enormous Middlesex asylum built there that residents had it changed to New Southgate in the 1870s. The nearby Great Northern (New Southgate) Cemetery, opened by the same Colney Hatch Company in the 1850s, once had its own funeral trains running up from a dedicated station near King’s Cross.
