North Finchley is centred on Tally Ho Corner, where the roads to East Finchley, Church End and Whetstone meet. The name is usually traced to a coaching company said to have run a staging post there in the 1830s, changing horses on the road north to Birmingham — though local historians have never found solid evidence the company existed, and the current Tally Ho pub on the corner only dates from 1927. The area itself stayed rural until Finchley Common was enclosed in 1816, after which it filled in with Victorian cottages and larger double-fronted villas, giving way to a more uniformly Edwardian character toward Woodside Park and Nether Street as the railway pulled development further out.
