Woodside Park takes its name from its station, which has changed identity twice. It opened in 1872 as Torrington Park on a Great Northern Railway branch to Edgware via Highgate, was renamed within a month, and was renamed again to Woodside Park in 1882. It stayed a main-line steam station for decades — Northern line trains only reached it in 1940, once the northern end of the High Barnet branch was absorbed into the Underground as part of the unfinished “Northern Heights” expansion. The streets that filled in around the station in the following decades are predominantly Edwardian terraces and semis, a step later than the Victorian core of neighbouring North Finchley.
