Whetstone has a well-worn local legend that soldiers sharpened their swords on a stone here before the Battle of Barnet in 1471, giving the area its name. It’s a good story, but the name is recorded a decade before the battle was fought, and more likely derives from “west town”. The area’s Underground station opened in 1872 simply as Totteridge, on the Great Northern Railway’s branch through the fields to the west, and only gained its current double-barrelled name — Totteridge & Whetstone — in 1874 once the neighbouring settlement was included. Housing along the High Road is a typical Barnet mix of interwar parades and semis over an older Victorian core near the station.
