Highgate is unusual for spanning three boroughs at once — Haringey to the north and east, Camden to the south and west, and a small part of Islington — though the tube station itself, on the Northern line’s High Barnet branch, sits in Haringey. It first opened as a Great Northern Railway surface station in 1867, with the current tube platforms added in tunnels beneath it in 1941. St Michael’s Church, near the top of Highgate Hill and consecrated in 1832, is the highest church in Greater London, and the Highgate Village conservation area around it is mostly Georgian and early Victorian houses that survived the area’s long spell as a genuinely separate village before London grew out to meet it.
