Cricklewood is unusual in that it sits across three London boroughs at once — Barnet, Brent and Camden all meet here, with the Barnet side centred on the Cricklewood and Mapesbury ward around the station. The station itself opened in 1870 as “Childs Hill and Cricklewood” on the Midland Railway’s new line to St Pancras, renamed Cricklewood in 1903, with a large locomotive depot and roundhouse built just to the north in 1882. The area’s two conservation areas capture the contrast well: the large Edwardian villas of the Mapesbury Estate a short walk from the station, against the more modest terraced streets built up around the Cricklewood Railway Terraces once the trains arrived.
