Childs Hill has no station of its own — the nearest is Golders Green (Northern line), about 15 minutes’ walk across West Heath. Long before any railway came through, this stretch of the Finchley Road hosted one of the relay stations on the Admiralty’s optical (semaphore) telegraph line to Great Yarmouth, in use from around 1808 into the 1840s — an obscure but genuine bit of history for what’s now a mainly late-Victorian and 1930s residential area. Most of the housing dates from the suburban expansion that followed the opening of the old Midland Railway station nearby in 1868 (later renamed Cricklewood), giving streets of modest terraces around Childs Hill Park, with semi-detached houses added in the 1930s.
