Kensal Green is split by the Grand Union Canal, which also happens to be the borough boundary here — Brent to the north, where most of the NW10 housing sits, and the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea to the south. That southern strip is where the area’s best-known landmark actually sits: Kensal Green Cemetery, opened in 1833 as the first of London’s “Magnificent Seven” Victorian cemeteries, built after cholera outbreaks made the old inner-city churchyards untenable. It’s the resting place of Isambard Kingdom Brunel and Charles Babbage, among some 250,000 burials. The residential streets north of the canal, close to the Bakerloo line and Overground station, are mostly Victorian terraces from the railway era.
