St John’s Wood was London’s first garden suburb, pioneered in the 1820s with detached villas set in their own grounds rather than the terraced rows typical of Georgian London — a layout every later garden suburb, including Hampstead Garden Suburb, drew on. The St John’s Wood Conservation Area still protects that character today: grand Regency villas and stucco Italianate terraces alongside 1930s mansion blocks and later infill.
